Samanta and Hugo, lifelong friends from the tough streets of Ciudad Meridiana on the outskirts of Barcelona, work together at Hugo’s security company. Sam needs far more money than she earns as a private bodyguard to pay for treatment for her boyfriend, who has lived with a severe spinal cord injury for twelve years. Hugo, her friend and boss, offers her a lucrative illegal job that draws them both into the shadowy trade in medicines and a spiral of violence and betrayal. The story moves from the shantytowns of Accra, Ghana, where Sirhan and Lewa struggle to find medicine for their mother’s type 1 diabetes, to the criminal network run by Portuguese siblings María and João and the cold, closed world of the pharmaceutical industry.
Es una historia intensísima, demoledora y francamente buena. Exquisitamente buena, porque a la fuerza narrativa de la autora, a la que no le sobra una “coma”, se une un ritmo endiablado, unos personajes inolvidables y una denuncia social que te dejará boquiabierto en el mejor de los casos, porque sacude, estremece y no te da tregua.
