This is the story of three generations of women marked by terrible events, events that seem to gravitate around a place, the red house, from which they all flee but towards which they all feel, however, a hypnotic attraction that, over time, pushes them to return. “We are a violent race,” says one of the protagonists; and “La casa roja” is the story of that destiny of blood and violence that seems to be irremediably marked for these women.
Told in the concise style, with a preponderance of apparently agile and simple dialogue but loaded with depth that already surprised us in “La puta que leía a Jack Kerouac”, this novel by Susana Hernández, awarded with a narrative award, is a bet of great literary weight on how to tell a story without unnecessary additions and directly to the reader’s sensitivity. Not in vain does it contain, written with the greatest austerity, some of the most chilling scenes that the reader has ever encountered.
